The 2019 Syrah Sonoma Coast from Red Car is savory with black pepper, saddle leather, black plum, and turned soil. The structure is full up front and has a modest finish with lift and fine tannins.
What do you know about Red Car? Red Car was founded in 2000 by the current owner, Richard Crowell, along with partners Mark Estrin and Caroll Kemp. Over a shared bottle of Paul Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle, the trio decided to leave their careers behind to make their own wine. With nothing but bunches of Syrah, a fermentation tank, and an oak barrel. That year Red Car released their first vintage of 50 cases of Syrah in a Culver City home.
Today, Red Car no longer produces wine in a garage in Southern California. Their coastal vineyards sit on the edge of the Pacific. Bands of mountains along the west Sonoma Coast offers the perfect climate for their Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Chardonnay. Winemaker, Tanner Scheer sticks to minimalistic principles, “Don’t manipulate the fruit in the winery. It’s up to the vineyards, the climate, the soil, and the farming practices we choose to employ”. Tanner is more focused on representing each varietal in its purest form.
